Microsoft offers a free antivirus tool, called Microsoft Security Essentials, to help secure and protect your Windows computer from viruses and other malicious attacks. Microsoft explains it as The anti-annoying, anti-expensive, anti-virus program.
They launched this antivirus tool with Windows Vista release, hence
anyone using an older version of Windows will not be able to install and
use it.
I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials on
my Windows 7 computer since last 6-8 months and definitely found it to
be effective and light on system resources. It automatically checks for
virus definition updates everyday and keeps it updated for maximum
protection.
Microsoft provides Microsoft Security Essentials for single home
users and small businesses with up to 10 computers. It’s important that
you run genuine Windows copy in order to install and use Microsoft
Security Essentials.
Download the antivirus program by selecting your Windows type – Windows Vista / Windows 7 32-bit ORWindows Vista / Windows 7 64-bit – depending on what’s installed on your computer. The download size is around 7-8MB only.
The Home tab gives an overview status of your system
– like Real-time Protection and Virus Definitions Update Status. It can
scan your computer in 3 mode – Quick, Full, and Custom. It’s recommended you perform a Quick scan everyday, it doesn’t take much time. The Update tab will update the program with latest virus definitions helping fight any threat or attack out there. The History tab
will show you previous scan reports, quarantine files, and allowed
items. You can also set numerous available options in the Settings tab.
Microsoft Security Essentials may not be the best available option in the market, but it definitely does what is says. It’s easy, clean and effective – moreover, it’s free. Hence, it proves to be a perfect antivirus solution for those Windows users who do not want to spend money buying an antivirus program
Have you used it? Did you find it effective?
